The Milwaukee Mile remains part of 'ongoing discussions' for the IndyCar Series

The Milwaukee Mile remains part of 'ongoing discussions' for the IndyCar Series

INDIANAPOLIS – Although there’s no plan at this time for IndyCar to return to a track once a staple of the sport, the Milwaukee Mile remains very much on the radar, the head of the company that owns the series said Friday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Mark Miles, president and chief executive officer of Penske Entertainment Corp., said there have been “ongoing discussions” about the possibility, reiterating what he has said previously.

The century-old oval at State Fair Park hosted 114 Indy-style championship races sanctioned by AAA, USAC, CART, Champ Car and IndyCar, many of them following Indy by a week.

Over the last few decades, various promoters tried and were unable to run a profitable IndyCar event. The track has not had one in eight years.

IndyCar Not Returning to the Milwaukee Mile in 2016

IndyCar announced its 2016 schedule today, and the historic Milwaukee Mile is not included among the listed venues.

Following the 2015 IndyCar race the Milwaukee Mile, the promoter group that had ran the previous four races faced legal challenges and dissolved.  Both IndyCar and officials from Wisconsin State Fair Park initially expressed optimism that the Milwaukee Mile would remain on the 2016 schedule.  The key to its return was finding a local promoter that could spearhead the event.  That task proved to be an insurmountable challenge.

"We couldn't find a Wisconsin promoter that we felt all the pieces fit", said IndyCar CEO Mark Miles.

Miles also added that the "Milwaukee Mile had great tradition", but that he was not feeling greatly optimistic about IndyCar coming back in the future.

Wisconsin State Fair Park has not provided comment on today's IndyCar schedule announcement.

It was Bourdais' 34th career victory, and first at an oval since winning at Milwaukee in 2006.

Castroneves had a remarkable run after starting last in the 24-car field. Graham Rahal was third.
