NASCAR Truck Series Not Returning to Milwaukee Mile in 2025

NASCAR Truck Series Not Returning to Milwaukee Mile in 2025

Shortly before the start of the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series LIUNA 175, Dave Kallmann broke the news that it might be the last NASCAR race at the historic Milwaukee Mile.  Read the complete story at the link below:

https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/motor/2024/08/25/milwaukee-mile-wont-host-nascar-craftsman-truck-series-race-in-2025/74925511007/

Unlike NASCAR's last departure after the 2009 season, the omission off the 2025 schedule has nothing to do with missed sanctioning fees or even attendance as some have speculated. It primarily comes down to scheduling conflicts between NASCAR and the Milwaukee Mile that resulted from adjustments to the NTT INDYCAR Series schedule.  When the 2025 INDYCAR schedule was announced several months ago, the Milwaukee Mile was included on the schedule for an August 24th race date.  That's one week earlier than the event in 2024, and falls on the weekend that the Truck Series had raced in 2023 and 2024.  The shift in the INDYCAR schedule was necessary to accommodate their new TV broadcast partner (Fox) which has limited TV windows available after Labor Day weekend due to their extensive coverage of NFL games.

Track Enterprises (promoter of the NASCAR weekend) looked at more than 10 dates other than the weekend before Labor Day, but either NASCAR or the Fair had a conflict that precluded each of them.

Despite the inability to land a date for 2025, John Yingling (Chairman of Wisconsin State Fair Park Board of Directors) was optimistic that NASCAR could return as soon as 2026.

“I think we continue to have great relationships with Track Enterprises and Bob Sargent,” Yingling said. “Bob Sargent’s our guy when it comes to NASCAR and building NASCAR here, but it’s also more because Bob has more depth than just NASCAR. He’s really good the entire late model stocks all the way up.

“Bob and I have had many conversations about getting other races, moving to Xfinity, seeing what we could do with Cup.”

Layne Riggs Wins Truck Playoffs Opener at Milwaukee

Layne Riggs Wins Truck Playoffs Opener at Milwaukee

For the second straight day, a second-generation rising NASCAR star earned his first-career win. This time, it was 22-year-old Layne Riggs claiming the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory in Sunday’s playoff-opening LiUNAI 175! at the historic Milwaukee Mile.

Riggs, son of former NASCAR competitor Scott Riggs, took the lead from Ty Majeski with 53 laps remaining and pulled away to a solid 1.547-second victory over the Wisconsin native and a super motivated group of playoff drivers, making the rookie driver’s effort all the more impressive.

Riggs’ victory in the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford comes a day after 23-year-old Harrison Burton — son of former NASCAR star Jeff Burton — earned his first career win in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway.

“I don’t even know how to describe it,” said an emotional Riggs, making only his 23rd start in the series, saying he knew in practice his truck was going to be in contention. “It’s awesome.

No one could match the pace displayed by Sawalich as he cruised to his seventh ARCA Menards Series victory of 2024 and his ninth overall on the platform. The young prospect has grown use to perfect outings this year, but emphasized the importance of the strenuous work displayed by everyone in the shop.

Sprecher back on board for 2024 ARCA Menards Series race at Milwaukee Mile

Sprecher back on board for 2024 ARCA Menards Series race at Milwaukee Mile

For the third consecutive year, Milwaukee-based Sprecher craft soda will be the entitlement sponsor of the ARCA Menards Series race at The Milwaukee Mile.

The Sprecher 150 will run on the same day as the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series 175-mile race, giving race fans a total of 325 miles of door-to-door racing action with the purchase of one ticket.

The ARCA Menards Series’ history at The Mile dates back to 1958, when NASCAR Hall of Famer Fred Lorenzen won a combined race with the United States Auto Club stock car tour. The next six races at The Mile were combination events with USAC; Tony Bettenhausen won in July 1959, Rodger Ward won in August 1959, Lorenzen won again in September 1959, and Bettenhausen won for the second time in July 1960.

After a 22-year hiatus, Dean Roper scored the victory in August 1982, and “The Dyer Flyer” Dave Weltmeyer earned the first of his 13 career ARCA Menards Series wins in August 1983.

After another 22-year hiatus, Frank Kimmel scored his 58th career ARCA Menards Series win in 2005. Phil Bozell won in 2006, with Kimmel earning his 71st career series victory in 2007. After a 14-year hiatus, the series once again returned in combination with the ARCA Menards Series East; Ty Gibbs led every lap in 2021, the first of three consecutive wins at The Mile for Joe Gibbs Racing. Sammy Smith won in 2022, and 16-year-old William Sawalich won in 2023.

“We are pleased to have our friends at Sprecher back on board in their hometown as we extend our long and storied history at The Milwaukee Mile,” said ARCA president Ron Drager. “Milwaukee is one of the most challenging racetracks on the schedule, and the fans in attendance will get to see two great races on the same day with the ARCA Menards Series leading into the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.”

Added Sharad Chadha, CEO of Sprecher: “Milwaukee is our home town, so we’re thrilled to continue our relationship with the ARCA Menards Series and The Milwaukee Mile. We hope to see all of our friends and neighbors out at the racetrack in August.”

The 17th running of the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series (NCTS) race at the 1.015-mile track will be known as the “LIUNA 175.”

The intensity of the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series PLAYOFFS starts in Milwaukee and will be on full display, as eight eligible drivers will be racing for the LIUNA 175 winner’s trophy and a ticket to the next round of the Playoffs, and ultimately, the championship. In the grandstands will be upwards of 1,000 Wisconsin LIUNA members cheering on their LIUNA sponsored driver, Tyler Ankrum, and the thrilling on-track action the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series continues to produce.

"On behalf of the 9,000 skilled, working men and women of the Wisconsin Laborers' District Council, who build our state's infrastructure, we are honored to have NASCAR return to the Milwaukee Mile and be the title partner for this year's LIUNA 175,” said Kent Miller, President/Business Manager of the Wisconsin Laborers’ District Council. “We felt the power of our membership last year with almost 600 strong in the grandstands, and this year we expect over 1,000 members and their families to attend and cheer on our union brother, Tyler Ankrum, in the No. 18 LIUNA Chevrolet Silverado.”

LIUNA, the Laborers’ International Union of North America, is no stranger to sports sponsorship or motorsports. The team is co-owned by Stratford, Wisconsin businessman, Bill Hilgemann and California native Bill McAnally. Ankrum, who has led a career-high 62 laps this season, has secured three top-five and four top-10 finishes in just the first eight starts of 2024.

“We are extremely excited to have LIUNA and its proud Wisconsin LIUNA members join us and become our title sponsor for the return of NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series to the Milwaukee Mile,” said Bob Sargent, President of Track Enterprises. “It takes a lot of effort to promote the kick-off race in the Truck Series playoffs, and our fans deserve it after last year’s successful event. “It takes a team to put on a NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series event, and we are thankful for our partners Clean Harbors and Wisconsin State Fair Park in giving Milwaukee race fans their first NASCAR race since 2009,” exclaimed Track Enterprises President Bob Sargent. “We had a great crowd of over 17,000 and we are thrilled with this opportunity to build on the success of our “Clean Harbors 175” and “Sprecher 150” race events again on Sunday, August 25, 2024!”

NASCAR’s Successful Return to The Milwaukee Mile

NASCAR’s Successful Return to The Milwaukee Mile

Race fans flocked to the Milwaukee Mile for the return of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series for the first time since 2009. A packed grandstands witnessed two exciting races with the NASCAR Truck Series Clean Harbors 175 and the ARCA Menards Series Sprecher 150.

The stars of the ARCA Menards Series took to the track first for their 150-lap event. Minnesota driver William Sawalich dominated most of the Sprecher 150, but would have to pass Jesse Love with six laps to go to take his fourth win of the year under the ARCA umbrella. Love and Venturini Motorsports teammate Sean Hingorani rounded out the podium.

After the ARCA race, it was time for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series to take the track for the Clean Harbors 175. Carson Hocevar’s pit strategy wasn’t enough to spoil Grant Enfinger’s dominant day as the Alabama driver swept the stages and won his third race of the season, sending himself to the second round of the Truck Series Playoffs. Hocevar and Christian Eckes finished second and third.

The ARCA Menards Series will be at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds on Sunday, September 3, while the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is off until Friday September 8 for their race at Kansas Speedway.

Clean Harbors Brings NASCAR Back To Milwaukee Mile After 14-Year Absence

Clean Harbors Brings NASCAR Back To Milwaukee Mile After 14-Year Absence

Second round playoff race to be run Aug. 27

WEST ALLIS, Wis.  – The triumphant return of NASCAR to the oldest operating motor speedway in the world will run this summer under the banner of a long-time race partner and worldwide sustainability leader – Clean Harbors.

The NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series 175-lap race at the Milwaukee Mile on Aug. 27 will be named the Clean Harbors 175.

“The competitive NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series’ return to the historic Milwaukee Mile is one of the most anticipated races on the series’ schedule this season,” said Chip Wile, SVP & Chief Track Properties Officer, NASCAR. “We are proud to welcome our long-time partners Clean Harbors and Safety-Kleen as part of the series’ return to the Milwaukee market for the Clean Harbors 175.”

Wisconsin State Fair Park, home of the Milwaukee Mile, has hosted at least one auto race every year since 1903 (except during U.S. involvement in World War II). The Clean Harbors 175 marks the return of the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series to the famed course following a 13-year absence. The truck series raced 15 times at the Milwaukee Mile from 1995-2009, producing 11 different winners.

“We’re proud to have played a part in bringing this race back after so long – especially for the playoffs,” said Clean Harbors co-CEO Eric Gerstenberg. “We have a large footprint in Wisconsin and the Chicagoland area, so we’ll be packing the stands in Milwaukee with hundreds of our employees and customers. We’re also hiring for a wide range of jobs at our field services, technical services and industrial services branches in the Midwest along with all kinds of drivers. It’ll be great to network with race fans and attendees of the event. We’re thrilled to have our name associated with this race and its celebrated return to the Cream City.”

Founded in 1980 with more than 700 service locations across the United States and Canada, Clean Harbors is the continent’s leader in environmental and industrial services. Clean Harbors currently manages the 17th largest private motor carrier fleet in North America with more than 15,000 vehicles. In 2020, Clean Harbors enabled NASCAR to be the first major sport to return early in the pandemic and subsequently deep cleaned a multitude of race tracks, advancing NASCAR’s efforts to safely return to competition. Along with decontamination efforts around Ground Zero following the Sept. 11 tragedies, Clean Harbors is noted for aiding in the Deepwater Horizon response and other major oil-spill clean-up efforts.

Through its subsidiary Safety-Kleen, Clean Harbors has been a decades-long partner of NASCAR as the worldwide leader in used oil recycling. The official environmental services supplier and green partner of NASCAR, Safety-Kleen collects all used oil at race tracks then re-refines it into KLEEN+ base oil or its Performance Plus motor oil. Safety-Kleen was founded in Milwaukee in 1963 before moving its headquarters to Elgin, Ill., and later to the Dallas area prior to be acquired by Clean Harbors. Its signature parts washers are still manufactured in New Berlin, Wis.

“This is a historic race for both NASCAR and the Milwaukee area,” said Clean Harbors co-CEO Mike Battles. “Safety-Kleen has a lot of history in the region and we’re certainly a company that strives to make history with the work we do for the environment. This will be a celebration for us and we hope it’s celebration for the community that we’ve been part of for so long, too.”

The list of former winners at the Milwaukee Mile is a historic register of some of the most revered names in automobile racing. William Jones of Chicago won a five-lap speed contest, setting the first track record with a 72 second, 50-mph lap, when auto racing debuted at “America’s Legendary Oval” in 1903. Barney Oldfield, Rex Mays, Tony Bettenhausen, A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Fred Lorenzen, Rick Mears, Dick Trickle and Alan Kulwicki are just some of the past winners at the iconic oval.

“Ron Hornaday, who was sponsored by Safety-Kleen, was the last NASCAR driver to win at the Milwaukee Mile, so that adds even more intrigue for us in coming back,” said Buddy Judy, Safety-Kleen’s director of motorsports.

Johnny Benson Jr., the 2008 series champion, is the winningest driver in Milwaukee after collecting a hat trick of consecutive CRAFTSMAN Truck Series wins from 2006-2008. Hornaday (1997 and 2009) and Ted Musgrave (2001 and 2004) both have a pair of victories there.

In addition to the Clean Harbors 175, fans will be treated to a double-dose of side-by-side racing action when the ARCA Menards Series opens the day’s racing card with the Sprecher 150.

“This race was always a battle and this year, in its return, won’t be any different,” said Milwaukee Mile promoter and Track Enterprises president Bob Sargent. “The relatively flat mile means lots of gear shifting, lots of lead changes and, most importantly, lots of action. The whole Track Enterprises team looks forward to NASCAR’s return to the historic Milwaukee Mile. We’re excited to see some great CRAFTSMAN Truck Series and ARCA Menards Series Racing.

“A lot of people missed this race. There’s nostalgia and there’s excitement – the best of both worlds.

We think this is a win-win for everyone and anticipate the teams, fans, sponsors and local community to enjoy a fantastic weekend of action at this incredible race track.”

The NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series will make its stop at the Milwaukee Mile on Sunday, August 27, 2023.

The Milwaukee Mile will come alive the weekend of the race, hosting not only the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, but also the ARCA Menards Series. Racing action will take place on Saturday and Sunday of the event weekend.
