Second Phase of Improvements Approved

Save the Mile Administrator May 05, 2023

On May 3rd, 2023, the State of Wisconsin Building Commission officially approved a second phase of repairs/improvements to the Milwaukee Mile racetrack.

The first phase, which started in early 2023, is addressing the most urgent safety needs prior to the return of NASCAR this August. When the second phase begins in October, the focus will continue to be on track safety features including:

  • Replacement of segmented concrete walls with reinforced concrete barrier walls.
  • Installation of additional SAFER barrier wall systems.
  • Installation of new catch fence systems.
  • Repair of the existing catch fence system with steel reinforcing posts.
  • Rehabilitating asphaltic surfaces

Work on the second phase projects should be substantially completed by June 2024, with full completion occurring ahead of events at the Milwaukee Mile that are scheduled for August 2024.

Additional Permanent Track Seating to Be Removed

As part of a separate Wisconsin State Fair Park improvement project that was approved this week, bleacher sections WW and XX outside of turn 4 will be removed prior to the 2024 race season.

The "North Point Improvements" project will focus on upgrading the north end of Grandstand Avenue for use during the annual State Fair and non-fair events. Removal of the two bleacher sections as part of this project will allow Grandstand Avenue to be widened at a pinch point outside of the Agricultural Coliseum.  The area formerly occupied by the bleachers will be largely paved with asphalt for parking during non-fair events, which also allows flexibility in how the space is used during future race weekends.

The removal of Sections WW and XX mark the first time that permanent seating has been removed since 2016.  Section YY was removed and sold as surplus in 2016 to Crandon International Raceway, with Section ZZ having been removed several years before that.  Permanent seating capacity following the removal of the latest two sections will remain in excess of 32,000.

Milwaukee Mile Improvements Approved

Save the Mile Administrator December 15, 2022

As we reported earlier in the week, the State of Wisconsin Building Commission was scheduled to consider a series of requests that would set the stage for approximately $3M in repairs/improvements to the Milwaukee Mile. Those requests were heard this afternoon, and unanimously approved in both the Subcommittee meeting and Full Commission meeting.

With the Commission’s approval, the repair/improvement projects should move ahead according to schedule. Construction will tentatively start in March 2023, with final completion occurring in July.

These repairs/improvements are largely safety related as the track prepares to host more events in the future, including the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series on Sunday, August 27th, 2023.

Specific areas of repair/improvement include:

  • Replacing expired components of the existing barrier impact wall system
  • Installing new stretches of barrier impact wall
  • Replacing existing turf with asphalt
  • Modifications to existing pedestrian and vehicle gates
  • Installing new energy absorbing sand barrels
  • Repairing concrete bases of the existing outer catch fence system

WEST ALLIS, Wis. – September 14, 2022 – To the delight of racing enthusiasts, Wisconsin State Fair Park officials today announced the return of NASCAR to the historic Milwaukee Mile Speedway at Wisconsin State Fair Park. The NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series will make its stop at the Milwaukee Mile on Sunday, August 27, 2023.

The Milwaukee Mile will come alive the weekend of the race, hosting not only the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, but also the ARCA Menards Series. Racing action will take place on Saturday and Sunday of the event weekend.

Track Enterprises of Macon, IL, has been producing and promoting ARCA events at the Milwaukee Mile for several years, and will continue its partnership with Wisconsin State Fair Park to bring NASCAR back to Milwaukee.

“We’re honored and proud to help Wisconsin State Fair Park bring NASCAR racing back to the Milwaukee Mile,” said Track Enterprises’ Bob Sargent. “A historical venue like the Mile deserves great racing and the NASCAR Trucks always put on a great show.”

In 1984 and 1985, the NASCAR Grand National Stock Car Race was held at the Milwaukee Mile. In 1993, NASCAR returned to the track with the Busch Series. In 1995, the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series also began racing at the Milwaukee Mile in its inaugural season, and both events remained at the track until 2009.

“The Milwaukee Mile is a fan-favorite, and some of NASCAR’s biggest stars scored early career wins at the historic one-mile oval,” said Ben Kennedy, NASCAR Senior Vice President of Racing Development and Strategy. “What’s more, this race will serve as the second race in the Truck Series Round of 8, adding even more anticipation for what is sure to be a thrilling return to the Mile.”

“After several successful ARCA races in recent years, the State Fair Park Board of Directors is thrilled to continue this momentum and welcome NASCAR back to the historic Milwaukee Mile,” said John Yingling, Wisconsin State Fair Park Board Chairman. “This event wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and dedication of the Track Enterprises team, the State Fair Park staff and the State of Wisconsin Administration. We look forward to an exciting weekend of racing next August and more events like it in the future.”

All tickets include both races and are on sale now. Reserved Seating starts at $45. General Admission Tickets are $40 for adults, and children 12 and under are FREE. Tickets can be purchased online HERE.

Information about camping and race day infield tickets will be released in the future.
